Superintendent Gets Another Good Report Card

Superintendent of the Mendon Upton Regional School District Dr. Joseph Maruszczak received another positive evaluation for his work during the 2016/2017 school year.

Maruszczak's annual review was presented during

the November 19 School Committee Meeting, where he was credited for being a "strong, competent, and capable leader."

School Committee Member Diane Duncan, who

also serves as the Chairperson for the Superintendent Evaluation Subcommittee, read Maruszczak's summative evaluation which was a compilation of input from all School Committee members regarding his performance during the 2017/2018 school year.

The evaluation process takes into consideration goals and performance standards. For the goals, possible ratings levels were: Did Not Meet Expectations; Some

Maruszczak thanked the School Committee for its feedback, stating he was "humbled" by the comments and added, "I consider myself blessed to be working with the School Committee, Administration team and staff that I do,"

Progress made; Significant Progress made; Met Expectations or Exceeded Expectations. For his student learning goal of developing coherency to homework across the district,

Maruszczak received a "Met Expectations." "Joe [Maruszczak] focused a lot of attention on what we think is often an overlooked part of education, the homework load," said Duncan. Duncan cited Maruszczak's accomplishments on this goal including the homework guidelines that were recently created by the administration to ensure homework is purposeful and useful and appropriate for different age levels.

Maruszczak received a "Significant Progress made" on his professional practice goal of defining student successes using multiple measures in the modern context.

"Collectively we agreed that this was a gigantic goal, but significant progress has been made" said Duncan. Duncan said that the new 5-year Strategic Plan and the district's

new "Portrait of a Graduate" were just some of the examples that the district is moving towards measuring student success in non-traditional ways. The third goal was a school improvement goal and included increasing opportunities in modern learning, promoting success in Social Emotional Learning (SEL), and improving communication, collaboration and outreach. Duncan stated that Maruszczak received a "Significant Progress made" on this goal. "There is still more work to be done in SEL because it is so important for student success," she said. "But this is going in the right direction." The Superintendent Evaluation also covers four performance standards - Instructional Leadership, Management and Operations, Family and Community Engagement, and Professional Culture. These categories are graded on a scale of Unsatisfactory; Needs Improvement; Proficient; or Exemplary. Maruszczak received a rating of "Proficient" for the standards of Instructional Leadership, Management and Operations, and a rating of "Exemplary" in Family and Community Engagement and Professional Culture. " "His viability in the schools and community is testament to the passion he feels as his role as superintendent," said Duncan. "The MURSD is a warm, welcoming, and inclusive school family thanks to the example he sets for all." Overall, the School Committee gave Maruszczak an "Proficient" rating for his performance in the 2017/2018 school year.

"We feel that Joe has been a strong, competent, and capable leader for our district who prefers to challenge himself with lofty goals," said Duncan. "His passion and performance have helped drive our district and students forward."
