Submitted · May 01, 2019
REFUGE Youth Event, sponsored by United Parish and St. Gabriel's Church will be held on Sunday, May 5 from 1 to 8 p.m. at United Parish. All teens in grades 7 through 12 are invited for an afternoon of fun, food and self-discovery at this ecumenical event designed to help young people deal with depression and anxiety. Individual support will be available.
Speakers are Jen Downing, who will walk the youth through an individual identity profile; Tim Messenger, a youth leader from the Worcester Catholic Diocese who
will talk to the teens about priorities and self-care; and a team from the American Foundation of Suicide Prevention who are going to offer a short film and group discussion about how to identify and talk to friends who are struggling with anxiety and depression. There will be a Cinco de Mayo-themed Taco Bar for dinner, followed by a Vigil. The evening closes with an Open Mic Night, where the youth are encouraged to display their talents, from singing and instrumentals to poetry reading and comedy. Door prizes will be offered.
A suggested $10 donation may be paid online or at the door. Registration is required at UnitedParishUpton.org/siteforms/view.php?id=14. For more information or to volunteer contact Deb Lazarz, dlazarz9903@gmail.com, or Jessica Murphy, journeywithjessy@gmail.com.
