New Selectman and Marijuana Question to be Determined on Election Day in Upton

By Michelle Sanford Staff Reporter/Columnist · May 01, 2019
Upton voters will determine their new Selectman and whether or not to prohibit the sale of retail marijuana during the Annual Town Election scheduled for May 14. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Nipmuc Regional High School.
Three residents are vying for the three-year Selectman's seat and include Michelle Antinarelli, Maureen Dwinnell, and David Ross. Several months ago, incumbent Gary Daugherty announced he would not be seeking a second term.
A number of other seats up for re-election remain unchallenged and include David Loeper for Moderator for one year, William Taylor for Assessor of
Taxes for three years, Dorothy Scally for the Mendon Upton Regional School District Committee for three
years, Glenn Fowler for Cemetery Commission for three years, Stedman Briggs for Board of Health for three years, Judith Katz Goodman, Michelle Antinarelli, and Anne O'Brien for the three, three year seats for Library Trustee, and Paul Carey for Planning Board for five years.
In addition, James Bates, Steven Driver, and Michael Morgan are running for three of the five Constable seats for three years; the two other seats remain without candidates.
Several other seats also remain without candidates and include Recreation Commissioner for three years, the Board of Commissioner of
Trusts Funds for three years, and the one-year Library Trustee's seat.
There is also a question on the ballot that concerns the sale of retail marijuana in town. At last year's November Special Town Meeting, voters approved a Zoning Bylaw amendment to prohibit marijuana retailers in Upton. Now, in order to pass the measure, a second vote must come forward through a ballot question. According to Town Manager Derek Brindisi, a yes vote will prohibit the sale of retail marijuana in Upton. However, should the ballot vote fail, retail marijuana would be permitted with an approved host agreement.
