Taft Library Provides Magical Afternoon

The Stupendous Mr. Magichead finally pulls a rabbit out of his hat.

Abracadabra! Through the generosity of the Taft Public Library, The Stupendous Mr. Magichead magically appeared at the Mendon Town Hall on July 20 for a fun afternoon show full of tricks and many, many laughs.

The appearance of Mr. Magichead, whose real name is John Sullivan, was part of the library's summer reading program Go Green and with approximately 70 in attendance for the show that day, he certainly did not disappoint.

Right from the start, Sullivan had the kids laughing loudly with his silly antics and physical comedy. Through the hour-long show, Sullivan performed all the usual magic tricks but added his own funny and unique means when performing them.

With the help of some audience volunteers, he performed a magical coin trick pulling numerous coins out of seven year old Mia's nose and ears. "How do you hear with all those coins in your ears?" he asked her.

Sullivan also asked five year old Anthony to help him with a rope trick by cutting the rope with at least five different pairs of scissors that refused to work.

Throughout his performance, Sullivan repeatedly tried to pull a rabbit out of his hat without much success. However, to the delight of his young audience, he finally pulled a live, furry bunny out of his top hat for his final trick. When the show was over, he lined the kids up and allowed them to pat the rabbit, affectionately named Lulu.

All in all, most would agree that The Stupendous Mr. Magichead was stupendous indeed.

This summer's Taft Reading Program, Go Green, is helping to educate youngsters on the importance of taking care of the planet through recycling and helping to conserve energy.

The summer program will be wrapping up soon, however, there is still plenty of fun to be had.

On Wednesday, August 11, a visit from Didgeridoo Down Under with Lindsey Dank will discuss Australia and all its wonders; on Thursday, August 12, Magician Ed Popielarczyk will conduct a magic workshop; children will learn how to make "green" crafts on Tuesday, August 17; and finally, on Thursday, August 19, the summer reading program will wrap up with the Improv4Kids comedy group.

Several of these programs require registration and have age restrictions.
