Teen Drinking Presentation at MHS on March 24

Toren Volkmann, co-author of the memoir, From Binge to Blackout: A Mother and Son Struggle With Teen Drinking, which paints a brutally candid picture of teenage binge drinking. – will be appearing at the Milford High School auditorium at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Mach 24. His presentation is free and open to the public.

Seven thousand kids under the age of 16 take up drinking every day: Volkmann was one of them. Emergency detox at 24 wasn't just a wake-up call for Volkmann; it also was the shock of a lifetime for his mother and co-author, Chris Volkmann. Like so many parents, she had easily overlooked her child's growing alcohol problem.

Their book is the award-winning account of one family's fight to confront the pain, fear, and denial of alcoholism, a struggle that takes place everyday, all over the country.

Now six years sober, Toren Volkmann and his mother speak all over the country at conferences, college campuses, prevention summits, and parent groups, presenting the latest information about the teen drinking culture and their suggestions for assisting parents and teens. They have been featured in People magazine, on the CBS Evening News, in The New York Times, and on The View with Barbara Walters.

Toren Volkmann will be speaking about the dangers of binge drinking, warning signs for parents, and real steps parents can do to help their kids. His presentation is being sponsored by Community Impact, Inc. and the Juvenile Advocacy Group with funding through the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and SMASHA.
