Cub Scouts, Start Your Cars!

The lineup of cars.

Good sportsmanship and pride in craftsmanship were evident on the faces of over 50 young Cub Scouts in the Upton Town Hall for the annual Pinewood Derby held on Sunday, January 30. The air was charged with excitement as the scouts cheered for one another in race after race proving every that every entrant was a winner by following the scout's motto – Do your Best'

All of the cars had to meet certain specifications to race including being 2 ¾ inches wide, 7 inches long and weighing no more than five ounces. Each scout received a kit with all of the necessary pieces to build their car and then they were able to shape and decorate their cars as they chose.

Craig Preston, Cubmaster and Steve Taylor, who heads up the derby event, along with many volunteers worked hard to pull the event together. Many fathers of the scouts help to set up the Pinewood Derby track which is nearly as long as the front of the stage in the town hall, twice. They have a trial run about two weeks before the big event then set up the track again the night before and then arrive early the day of to finish the final set up.

Gone are the days of debating whose car was the winner, now computer software has each car timed and can tell the winner for each heat to the second. Upton's past winner's names are displayed on the side of the racetrack. "It is a great family event," said Lee Ann Murphy, mom to two scouts who participated in the event. Murphy's husband Sean also helps out with the pit crew, a table set up specifically to help with any emergencies with the cars, a scale, glue and weights to be added if a car is too light and tools to take the weights off if a car is too heavy.

"With the older scouts helping today, it makes a good transition from Cub Scout to Boy Scout" Murphy said.  Trophy categories included Fastest Car, which must have had the fastest average in four heat races, this category was then broken down further into an Overall winner, and by rank: Tiger, Wolf, Bear, Webelo I and Webelo II (all of which had 1st, 2nd & 3rd places). Awards were also given out for Sunday driver (the slowest in each category) and Theme trophies were awarded for Patriotic, Funniest, New England Sports, Cub Scoutish as well as a Leaders' Choice award. The top three winners for overall fastest speed for the entire Pinewood Derby for Pack 132 were 1st place Jacob Martin (Webelo I), 2nd place Matthew LaCross (Bear), and 3rd place Sam Heye (Bear.)
