Mendon Special Town Meeting to Decide Five Articles

Residents will vote on just five articles during Mendon's Special Town Meeting scheduled for Monday, February 28 at Miscoe Hill School beginning at 7 p.m.

Town Coordinator Dale Pleau reviewed the warrant during a February 8 Board of Selectmen's meeting.

The first article is requesting that $122,000 be taken out of stabilization to fund a new sander/plow dump truck for the Highway Department. The current vehicle is more than 25 years old and has had numerous repairs. The latest repair to the vehicle concerns the transmission and would cost more than $10,000 to fix. As a result, Highway Surveyor Alan Tetreault came before the Board during a January 25 meeting to request funding for a much needed truck. Tetreault said he knows of a 2010 fully loaded demo vehicle that would cost approximately $122,000.

Article 2 is asking residents to transfer $16,000 from stabilization in order to pay the yearly rental fee for the Public Safety Department's temporary trailer.

Due to the fact that three police officers are out of work from injuries, Article 3 is requesting that $20,000 be taken out of free cash and transferred to the Police Department Wages Overtime account.

Article 4 is concerning engineering fees from the Conservation Commission and is requesting that $2,276 be transferred from free cash to the Conservation Commission's Engineering Consulting Services for a peer review. These monies will be reimbursed.

And finally Article 5 is requesting that $3,000 be transferred from free cash to help fund a study as part of a wind energy project that could place wind turbines in town that would help to decrease costs to the town. In order for the town to qualify for grant monies for the project, a wind study must first be completed. According to Selectman Lawney Tinio, an individual source has agreed to fund some of the monies toward the study but another $3,000 is needed.

Currently, the free cash account contains $38,014 and the stabilization account contains $680,099.
