Clough School a Spanish Award for Excellence Finalist

The Spanish Immersion program at Clough School has been notified it is a finalist for the Award for Excellence. The Education Office of the Embassy of Spain in the United States organizes the competition. The award is given to schools in the United States that show excellence in language education programs. The competition was open to public, private and charter schools across the country within the Primary and Secondary education system that seek to improve student foreign language competence.

There were 50 schools that applied at the Elementary level and there are currently nine finalists which include Clough School; Central Elementary in California; Denver Montclair International School and Global Village Academy, both in Colorado; in Illinois; Hopewell in North Carolina; Blythe Academy of Languages in South Carolina; Anson McCarthur Jones in Texas; and Claremont Immersion in Virginia.

The Mendon-Upton Spanish Immersion program began with a single kindergarten class of 26 students in the fall of 1998 and grew to include over a dozen classrooms involving about 12 percent of the districts student population.

The district's K-2 curriculum is taught completely in Spanish beginning the first day of school. English Language Arts instruction begins in the third grade for a portion of the school day. Class time devoted to English increases in the fourth grade.

On February 17 a representative of the selection committee to sit in on classes and observe the students and teachers in the Spanish Immersion program at Clough School. Sometime in March the selection committee will meet and announce the winners. The first place winner will receive $5,000 that can be used for materials for the program, second place will receive $3,000 and third place will receive $1,000. The prizes will be awarded in May at the Embassy of Spain.

In 2009, the Spanish Immersion Programs at Clough School and Memorial School were selected to be part of the Ministry of the Spanish Education International Academies Program and serve as an International Spanish Academy (I.S.A.) with support from the Spanish government.

The International Spanish Academies project (I.S.A.) is a bilingual, Spanish/English educational model that the Spanish Department of Education of Science promotes in collaboration with American educational authorities. I.S.A.'s are a part of an international cooperative educational project in English and Spanish between public schools in the United States and Canada and the Ministry of Education and Science of Spain.

On October 26-28, Principals, Vin Rozen and Debra Swain attended the fifth annual seminar for International Spanish Academies for principals in Washington, D.C. The trip was fully funded by the Spanish government .
