Milford Works to Meet Needs of All Students

During the report of Barbara Cataldo, the Assistant Superintendent for Pupil Personnel Services, at the January 6 Milford School Committee meeting a presentation was given on the Pre-Vocational Program being run at the Milford High School.

Paul Agnese and Michelle Santangelo spoke about the program, formally called the Bistro, which serves a specific special education population between the ages of 15 and 18. The program focuses on academics, social, and vocational skills that the students can use in both school and work settings.

The students learn skills to prepare food, such as washing and cutting, so that they might be able to have a job in the hospitality industry. Some students are currently working at the copy center at Stacy Middle School, the school is reaching out to other businesses in the community to provide work opportunities for the students.

According to Agnese, the academic portion of the program focuses on basic functioning skills such as basic addition and subtraction, how to use a phone book and a dictionary, writing using correct grammar such as capitals, punctuation, and for some students writing paragraphs and even resumes.

Another component of the program is teaching daily life skills. These include things like separating laundry, using a washer and dryer, folding laundry, and making beds. These students also have the opportunity to participate in some regular education courses such as cooking and art class.

Cataldo told the committee that the evolution of the program has already come a long way, "we are really pleased with what Michelle and Paul have brought into the program."
