Snowmen to Rival Frosty

This lovely hula snowman won Best Multi-holiday Celebration at the Memorial School snowman building contest.

Although going to school on a Saturday carries a pretty negative connotation, for Memorial Elementary School students armed with shovels, colored water, props, and parents willing to do the digging Saturday February 12 was nothing but a day in the snow.

The Snowman Building Contest was in the works for the past three years, according to Memorial Principal Francis Anderson, but this was the year that Mother Nature cooperated. With snow drifts measuring taller than students, teams of students and parents broke through the ice covered snow to carve out their share of the white stuff in front of the school.

Superintendent Robert Tremblay, as judge of the contest, was impressed by the creativity of the students and told them that he couldn't simply pick a first, second, and third prize-winner. He divided up the awards instead by category with one award going to "best snow sculpture", while another went to "best multi-holiday celebration," a third to "the heart of Memorial," and the final to the "best traditional snowman."

Best snow sculpture went to a trio of swamp creatures carved out of the snow and sprayed green, which was designed by Jack Weiner.

All students received a certificate of participation and a bracelet, while award winners prizes which had been donated by Acapulco's, American Karate and Fitness School, and Memorial School Council.  Hot chocolate for the event was donated by Honey Dew Donuts in Milford.
