Mendon Override Amount to Change

Money and override issues again occupied the Mendon Upton School Committee at their April 25 meeting. Officials had some bad news regarding the accounting mistake by the Mendon Finance Committee, which incorrectly listed a grant amount and expenditure in the town's Fiscal 2011 budget. Due to the mistake, the amount that Mendon voters will be acting on at the Annual Town Meeting on May 6 and the Annual Town Election May 17 is $93,187 less than the school district budget requires. According to School Committee chairman, Don Morin, the mistake coupled with the matching number for Upton, $112,660, means the district will be short $205,847, even if the Proposition 2½ operational override in Mendon is approved.

School Committee members said they will not take any action at this time but will wait for the Town meetings and vote. Morin did however explain that he is working with Mendon Board of Selectmen Chairperson Lawney Tinio as well as Mendon Finance Committee Chairperson Chris Felton and everyone is 100 percent in support of this override, which would benefit the school and the town.

Also on April 25, Superintendent Antonio Fernandes explained that they are down to the last forms for the Massachusetts School Building Authority grant that will replace the roof, boiler and windows at Miscoe Hill Middle School. The total cost for this project is $4,028,682, with the state grant paying 47 percent. The School Committee unanimously voted to approve the project and also approved to officially notify both the Mendon Board of Selectmen and the Upton Board of Selectmen of this project. They will be looking to the two towns to fund the remaining portion as a debt exclusion. They are looking at a 10 year bond for this project. A DVD was put together to highlight the areas in need. On the DVD, Miscoe Principal Roseanne Kurposka and Assistant Principal Ann Meyer provided a tour of the building. A link to the tour will be posted on the district website and it will also be available on the cable access station.
