Model Airplanes Fly Above Hopedale Pond

John Holcomb, instructor for the Millis Model Aircraft Club, holds one of the planes he has created during the club's Air Show over Hopedale Pond.

The Little Red Shop Museum recently hosted a Model Airplane Demonstration performed by the Millis Model Aircraft Club on May 1. Twelve members of the club attended along with a gathering of onlookers of all ages. The younger spectators seemed to be very amused with the aerial acrobatics along with being able to see the planes up close. They commented most about the planes having mini pilots in them.

Similar to their Oktoberfest show, the event entertained all. Brad Kaye, President of the club talked about the challenges of the wind above the pond. There seemed to be a swirl wind affect above the tree line. John Holcomb, who is an instructor with the club, showed the inner working of Styrofoam planes he creates along with their operating systems, which includes electronic speed controls. He talked about flight times being between 6-15 minutes and the challenges of landing the small Styrofoam crafts on the beach of Hopedale Pond. The larger planes made of various materials have larger wheels and were able to land on the pond.

"The Model Aircraft demonstrations are fun and exciting for people of all ages," said Tom McGovern, event organizer. "Seeing these talented individuals work their craft is unforgettable and it's a great way to enjoy the spring weather and Hopedale's beautiful park spaces."

Kaye said the club had performed various demonstrations over the past five months at the Milford Youth Center on Pearl Street. The next demonstration is May 14. The demonstrations allow participants to learn how to fly the smaller 12-inch planes.

Brad Kaye, president of the Millis Model Aircraft Club, discussed the tricky winds over Hopedale Pond during the club's May 1 Air Show.
