Milford Congregational Church Inner City Mission

Preparing to serve lunch at Pilgrim United Church of Christ Dorchester are (l-r) Margaret Myatt, Sara MacKenzie, Steve Ellis, Nara Paccico and Donna Andreotti.

Fifteen members of First Congregational Church UCC of Milford left in the early morning on April 2 to spend the day assisting with those who are homeless and hungry through programs in Boston and Dorchester.

Taking with them 150 sandwiches, two cases of fruit, and seven cases of bottled water that was graciously donated by Stop n Shop of Milford, they divided into groups, one going to Pilgrim United Church of Christ of Dorchester to begin preparing the noon lunch for the neighborhood homeless and needy. The other group spent the early morning on the Boston Common.

Upon arrival there were about 100 people waiting in line for the van to unload the food that First Congregational brought, along with the soup and pasta the Boston Mission Society supplied. In less than an hour all the food was distributed as more people from the streets arrived. They then caught up to the group at the church in Dorchester to assist in prep work for the lunch and to help clean the shelter, which houses 75 people who are homeless.

During the serving of lunch, the members of the Milford church took time to have conversations with the people who came in for their meal. In a very short time a close relationship developed between the folks from First Congregational and the volunteers of the shelter as well as the people that were served that day.

Gratitude to the success of this project is extended to Stop n Shop of Milford and all who participated in support of those who went.
