Joan Scribner

Retiring Nipmuc Regional High School Principal, Joan Scribner.

On June 30, Nipmuc Regional High School principal Joan Scribner will retire from the Mendon-Upton Regional School District. Scribner received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish and French from Colorado State University. Born and raised in Colorado, she and her family moved to Massachusetts where she received her Masters of Education and her administration certification from Worcester State College. Working as a substitute teacher and serving on the Mendon Upton Regional School Committee while her children were young, she was hired by the district in 1989 to teach French, Spanish, and Latin part time at Nipmuc.

Scribner then taught Spanish full time for a number of years before moving on to serve as Dean of Students. She was named Assistant Principal at Nipmuc in 1995, a post she held for five years until she was named principal on April 1, 2000.

Scribner said she feels blessed to be in this district and is especially proud that during her 10-year tenure as principal, Nipmuc was named a Blue Ribbon School of excellence by the US Department of Education.

Scribner also served on the board of the Massachusetts Secondary School Administrators' Association for eight years and was President for one of the years. She also served on the Governor's Readiness Council. Scribner explained that through these opportunities she was able to stay in touch with what was happening in education throughout the State.

Living in Upton she was able to form a strong bond with the town and felt part of the community.

As she gets ready for her retirement, Scribner noted she will miss the interaction with the students and faculty. She explained that watching the students grow and seeing their progress was the most rewarding aspect of her career.

She commends the faculty for their enthusiasm and commitment to the students, and thanks the community, faculty, administrators and students for all their support over the years.

What's next for Scribner? Her husband retired in December and they both hope to travel and visit their children and grandchildren who live out-of-state.
