Where Does the Time Go?

It's that time of year again, when you pack up the car, and head off with your offspring to take them back to college. And so, I find myself in Kansas City, Mo. as you read this, completing a journey back to the Kansas City Art Institute.

Since I am with my youngest child, my thoughts turn to asking myself, "Where did that time go?" It seems just like yesterday when there was first one baby, then another, then another. Now, there are three grownups: two making their way in the world and one about to do so in a few semesters.

My late father once advised me to spend as much time with my children as I could before they went to kindergarten. "After that," he said, "They're not really yours anymore." Once in school, he explained, your children develop friendships and want to spend time with their friends, with their sports teams and with other activities. Then, before you know it, they are teenagers spending their time – well, everywhere. And then, they go off to college and beyond.

What seemed to take forever – toddlers through teens and into twenties – seems to have gone by in a snap of the fingers. I find myself feeling – for want of a better word – wistful.

I am not alone in feeling this way. I talk to others in my age group and get the same sentiment. So, parents, spend as much time as you can with your children and treasure the time and then the memories. And, as the joke goes, be nice to them because they choose your nursing home.

On a different note, since it's mid-August, summer will soon be over. Enjoy it while we can, because – being New Englanders – we'll soon be complaining about the cold and snow.
