Pitching Staff Leads Milford Past Wachusett

Nothing truly compares to Milford Legion Baseball. It is a tradition unlike any other in summer ball. The great fan turnouts, high quality play and electric atmosphere of Fino Field turn any ball game into an experience. And a storied past leads to high expectations for Post 59 every season; with fans and players expecting no less in 2017.
In the blue and gold's first game of the season, an away game on June 11, they suffered a tough 6-2 loss to a strong Leominster club. Milford was unable to capitalize on key scoring chances but looked to score early and often in their home opener against Wachusett on Wednesday evening, June 14.
Milford's starting pitcher, Kyle Nocera, threw a scoreless top of the first inning. In the bottom of the inning Shawn Rebello and Alex Reynolds drew walks, bringing Tyler Monahan to the plate. Monahan hit a hard ground ball down the third base line bringing Rebello home and making it a 1-0 game. Struggles continued for Wachusett pitcher Peter Field as two runs were plated after a bases-loaded hit batsmen and a walk, which extended Milford's lead to 3-0.
In the bottom of the second Rebello started another rally for Post 59 by drawing his second walk of the evening. He then stole both second and third to put himself in prime scoring position. He eventually came into score on a throwing error by the third basemen on a Monahan ground ball.
Milford took at 4-0 lead into the top of the 3rd.
After trading a scoreless 3rd inning Post 42 picked up two runs in the top of the 4th to cut the Milford lead in half.
The Milford scoring continued in the bottom of the 6th when Rebello laced an RBI base hit into right field increasing the lead to 5-2.
Relief pitcher Nate Irwin closed the door in the bottom of the 7th giving Milford their first District 4 victory of the season.

Key to the game
In a highly contested game, the Milford pitching staff stole the show. Kyle Nocera gave Post 59 five fantastic innings, fanning seven Wachusett batters and only surrendering two runs. Nocera effectively mixed his pitches, doing a great job of keeping hitters off balance. Nate Irwin replaced the hard throwing lefty in the top of 6th and received the six-out save, striking out three in his two innings of work.
