Offense Carries Post 59 To Third Straight Victory

After a resounding 15-3 victory over Sturbridge on Saturday morning, Post 59 returned to Fino Field Sunday afternoon and cruised to a 12-2 victory over Main South.

Both teams were unable get on the board in the first two innings. In the third inning, Main South scored two runs to take an early 2-0 lead.

It did not take long for the Blue and Gold to respond. In the bottom of the inning, Jonathan Rice started the rally with a base hit to left field. Dawson McMillan and Joe Sanchioni laid down consecutive perfect bunts and were both able to reach safely.

"In any type of game you are going to recognize what is happening and their guys were playing deep," Post 59 Manager Steve DiVitto said after the win about electing to play small ball with his team behind on the scoreboard.

The two bunts served as the catalyst for Milford and sparked an offensive explosion. With the bases loaded, Shawn Rebello laced a hard ground ball that was misplayed by the shortstop, allowing two runs to score. After two sacrifice flies, Milford took 4-2 lead into the 4th inning.

Milford broke the game open in the 4th with eight runs . A mix of walks and timely hitting increased the Milford lead to double digits, an offensive bombardment that ended the game early due to the 10-run rule. The win is the third in a row for Post 59.

"It is tough early on because a lot of guys from a lot of different areas are trying to get familiar to one another," DiVitto said. "So far so good, these guys are gelling nicely."

DiVitto said team chemistry is a crucial part to the success of any ball club and Milford has a group of "great kids who come to the field and work hard every day."

Key to the game

From top to bottom the Milford batting lineup was effective, especially in its eight run barrage in the 4th inning.

"The majority of our lineup has been putting good swings on the ball," DiVitto said.

Milford has scored 27 runs in the past two games to improve to 3-1. The team returns to action Monday night at 7:00 pm at Fino Field against Cherry Valley.
