Milford Legion Falls To Wachusett In Zone 4 Playoff Battle

Failing to capitalize with runners in scoring position came back to haunt the Milford as it fell 5-1 to Wachusett in the opening game of the Zone 4 American Legion baseball tournament.
As a whole the team left 13 runners on base and had trouble coming up with timely hits. Six runners were stranded as the team left the bases loaded in back-to-back innings.

Post 59 will need to regroup quickly after the tough loss and facing elimination with one more defeat. The team is back in action on Saturday at noon at Fino Field against Main South.

Michael Farrell seemed to be rolling in his best performance of the 2017 season until the top of the 7th. Wachusett had a very difficult time picking up Farrell's pitches and were kept off balance for almost the entirety of the game. The Bellingham native kept a high-paced rhythm and rarely gave hitters time to get set up in his dazzling outing. He struck out 16 Wachusett batters and only giving up five hits in putting on a six-inning show for the Milford faithful.

The incredible performance was spoiled in the top of the 7th as Wachusett tied the game at one, ending Farrell's evening.

Milford Manager Steve DiVitto has stressed the importance of being more consistent defensively heading into the postseason and back-to-back errors in the top of the 8th allowed the floodgates to open for Wachusett. Post 42 struck for four runs and the lead would be enough for a huge playoff victory.

Milford's lone run came in the bottom of the 4th inning, when Jake Leblanc laced an RBI base hit, scoring Kyle Nocera.

Back to back rainouts pushed the start of the postseason for both Milford and Wachusett back to Friday night. Milford entered as the third seed and in Bracket B of the two-tier, double-elimination format after finishing the regular season with a record of 18-6.
