MHS Field Hockey Looks to Build on End of ’16

The Milford High School field hockey team enters the 2017 season after a strong finish last fall, and head coach Kim Danish said the increased effort of her team in the offseason has her excited for the new campaign.
"It's a credit to the kids, they show up to practice every day and bring great energy," Danish said. "We have a number of underclassmen playing on club teams and a number of our incoming freshmen went to our clinics and other events we have put on."
The Scarlet Hawks finished the latter part of the 2016 season with several memorable efforts, including a tie against a strong Ashland team and a lopsided win over Sharon on senior night. Top goal scorer Shannon Cormier, a senior captain this fall, has been one of the best examples for younger players looking to hone their skills during the offseason.
"They see her and know about her experience," Danish said. "We are moving in the right direction with an increasing number of girls participating in these off-season camps and captain's practices. They have really taken it upon themselves to get better."
In addition to Cormier, who once again figures to be a focal point of the Hawks' offense, fellow senior captain Danielle Fokas will also feature prominently into the attack. A third captain, Emily Condon, will be counted on to lead the defense, Danish said.
Sophomore Paige Reisman is a candidate to start in goal after seeing some time between the pipes during her freshman campaign. Danish said the goaltender is one of the team's younger players who worked through offseason camps.
Kate Wilmette, Colby Bowers, and Megan Larouco are all expected to be integral pieces in the midfield, while Danish said Julie Rabinowitz will be looked to for a "spark for our team in a variety of roles."
Milford will have a number of open spots on the varsity roster and on the starting field as the players work through tryouts this week. A total of 11 seniors graduated from the program last year.
"We showed our commitment through the season," Danish said. "We look at ourselves as a developing program and we definitely competed tougher the second time through our schedule. This year, we will look to do the same with a new group."
