BVT Football Faces Assabet in Playoff Rematch

The unbeaten Blackstone Valley Tech football team earned the top seed in the Central Mass. Division 7 playoffs and will take on an Assabet team it already beat soundly in the first game of the postseason on Saturday.
"They are playing well right now, they are scoring a ton of points and their quarterback is athletic," head coach Jim Archibald said. "We are really stressing to the kids that you can't take them lightly."
The Aztecs secured the number four seed in the playoff bracket after finishing the regular season 6-2. They have rattled off four straight victories after losing 33-0 at home against BVT at the end of September. Archibald insists the game was closer than the score suggests.
Valley Tech enters the playoffs 8-0 overall, outscoring foes by an average of 31-5 on the season. The Beavers hammered Worcester Tech 42-8 last Saturday, with five different players finding the end zone. Fullback Sam Niro carried the ball eight times for 104 yards and scored two touchdowns, and sophomore J.D. Antaya added a first-quarter score to start the rout.
Senior linebacker Corey Smith finished the game with seven tackles and an interception. Archibald also praised the play of both his offensive and defensive lines, particularly junior nose tackle Ethan Blake who the coach said "dominated the middle of the line of scrimmage."
A lot has changed for the Beavers since they upended Assabet in the first league game of the season, but Archibald said having had one look at this week's opponent will be helpful.
"We have had some injuries, so we are a different team" he said. "But I think from an alignment standpoint, how they line up to certain things we do, that helps. We know what defensive look we are likely to get when we are in a certain formation."
While stressing the focus is on the first-round playoff game, Archibald said his unbeaten squad has the potential to put together a deep playoff run.
"You can't argue with the results," he said. "I can certainly see this team playing for a district title. At the beginning of the year, that was our goal. We need to stay focused on Assabet and then set our sights on the next round. This team is certainly capable though of playing for, and winning, a district title."
Valley Tech hosts Assabet for the first-round postseason tilt Saturday at 2 p.m.
