Nipmuc, BVT Players Will Play Big Roles for Post 59
A contingent of players from Nipmuc and Blackstone Valley Tech will once again be donning the blue and gold of Milford Legion Post 59 this summer, and manager Steve DiVitto expects the group to provide a big lift for his team.
Nipmuc pitcher Jack Tempesta and catcher and outfielder Jacob Beder both return to the Milford roster this summer.
"Tempesta is going to be in the starting rotation, that's where we are going to begin and go from there," DiVitto said. "He has thrown a lot of innings for his high school team so we are going to make sure to manage those innings to make sure he does not get worn down."
Beder is going to compete for playing time behind the plate and in the outfield. Among the players also vying for time at catcher is Tyler Almeida, a former BVT student
who transferred to Milford High School at the beginning of this past school year. "Beder is doing a great job," DiVitto said. "he is hitting well over .300 for Nipmuc and we know he is going to battle for playing time."
DiVitto said this year's roster is deep and versatile,
with numerous players able to provide pitching depth for Post 59. BVT right-handed pitcher Justin Metcalf is one player who will see some innings. DiVitto said he saw Metcalf throw this spring with the Beavers and has been impressed. He plans to use the Valley Tech student athlete out of the bullpen to start the year, and as a spot starter.
Metcalf 's commitment also caught DiVitto's eye, as well as his ability to play the outfield and the corner infield positions. "During the tryouts, he was the first kid at the field," DiVitto said. "It just shows the level of commitment he is going to have. We are excited he has sown that and he seems like that tough-minded baseball guy that we love to see."
Milford is looking to follow up a successful and memorable 2017 campaign. Post 59 hosted the state tournament at Fino Field and made the most of the opportunity, advancing to the title game before falling to Braintree. Milford finished the year with a 24-10 overall record, and after losing the first game of the double- elimination state tournament, rattled off four straight victories in elimination games before falling in the title tilt.
