The Blackstone Valley Tech boys' cross country team is cruising through Colonial Athletic League play and a strong crop of young runners has been setting the pace for the Beavers.
Valley Tech entered the week 5-1 in dual meet competition with a loss to Monty Tech the only blemish on the season through the first six meets. The team still has the league meet at the end of the month and the state vocational meet in November ahead.
"The goal is to win the state voke again, but we have some work to do," said head coach Caitlin Forgit. "We did lose to Monty Tech, but I think that will give them the motivation to work that much harder."
Several freshmen have stood out for BVT so far this year, including Matt Healey, who has come in first for his team multiple times. Kaden Vincelette and Anthony Faath, two more freshmen, have also been regular contributors finishing in the top-seven in matches, Forgit said.
"It's been good to get some young blood in there, they have all been doing well," the coach said. "To have freshman doing so well has been pretty exciting to see. It's always good to have talented young runners. Our strongest classes are the sophomores and the freshman which is great because you can develop them as runners over the next few years.
"It's been really fun to have them," Forgit added.
The Beavers are not devoid of seniors and juniors to help show the way for the young talent on the team. Senior captain Andrew Floyd has been among the squad's top runners. "He is doing well," Forgit said. "He battled a sickness midway through the season but he is battling back from that and will be moving right along soon."Jacob Constable is another runner who has been a consistent presence, Forgit said. Tyler Doyle and Andrew Benoit are both runners who were among the team's best a season ago and have been able to make positive strides in 2018, the coach added.
Blackstone Valley Tech will compete in the CAL meet on October 30. The state vocational meet, where the Beavers are the defending champions, takes place on November 7.
