Ex-Nipmuc Coach Pens Book On Sports & Finances

Larry Sasso has spent 33 years coaching baseball and softball and nearly as many years working in the insurance and financial services business. The former Nipmuc Regional High School junior varsity baseball coach is looking to combine his expertise in a book called, Get in the Game, A Young Adult's Guide to Baseball, Softball, Personal Finances, and a Balanced Life.
"I wanted to educate kids in a fun way," Sasso said. "Kids have to prepare for the big world when they graduate from high school or college and finances are going to fall in their lap. A lot of young adults never take a personal finance class."
In putting the book together, Sasso said he found many analogous situations between the sports he loves and his chosen line of work. Having a good financial mentor is as important as having a good coach. Understanding the fundamentals is vital in both the pursuit of wins and the goal of a strong financial future. And avoiding mental mistakes and the financial equivalent of running into an out on the base paths is huge.
"It comes down to preparation, saving and staying out of debt," Sasso said. "But the common theme you see throughout the book is: people have to believe in themselves."
Sasso said he spends significant time educating his own children — one a senior in high school and the other a college senior — about the importance of good finances. The book will teach young adults about everything from understanding their college loans to recognizing how time can be a friend in finance when one starts saving from an early age, or a huge problem if saddled with credit card debt early in life.
The foreword is written by Frank Tarkenton, the former Minnesota Vikings' quarterback and a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Sasso left his job as the JV baseball coach at Nipmuc in order to become the head softball coach at Anna Maria College. The U.S. Marine Corps veteran is also an adjunct professor at Anna Maria and is pursuing a doctoral degree in leadership while running his own business.
The book hit the shelves this week and Sasso said people have already begun to purchase it on Amazon. He is going to have a book signing at Anna Maria and is in the process of putting together an event at Nipmuc. He said Nipmuc is mentioned in the book and a place that has stood out for him in his coaching career.
"There was something about that school and those kids," Sasso said. "They prepared and they worked hard."
