Strong Start for Milford High Baseball

After a five-win season a year ago, the Milford High School baseball team jumped out to a 4-2 start to the 2019 campaign behind strong pitching and a deep lineup.
The strong beginning to the season is a reward for a group that bought into head coach Alex Dion's plan and is now reaping the rewards.
"It's been huge, especially for the guys who are returning from last year," Dion said. "For them to be able to go through everything they went through last year and for me to tell them 'things were going to pay off ' and now they are getting those results, I'm happy for them."
Milford only lost two games through the first six of the year, one to Franklin, last year's Super 8 champion, and another to recent state champion Mansfield. "Those were both really good games," Dion said. "We had the lead against Franklin and we played well against Mansfield, the just had a really good guy on the mound. But we have taken care of business otherwise."
Danny Corsini has excelled on the mound for the Scarlet Hawks, posting a 2-0 record with a 1.87 ERA and 11 strikeouts through his first 15 innings on the mound.
He also kicked off the season hitting .500 with five runs scored and fives batted in.
Colby Pires has also been strong as a pitcher. He's 1-1 with a 2.52 ERA through his first three starts. The lineup has been bolstered by a number of players. Senior captain Matt Shaver is hitting .421 with a pair of doubles and five RBIs. Sophomore Carter Scudo was a .400 hitter through the first six games with a team-high three doubles and junior Luke Rosa was hitting .385 with a home run and six runs batted in.
"We have been getting it from all over the lineup and it takes some pressure off the guys where they don't have to rely on the top four in the order to get the job for us," Dion said.
Milford will look to continue to build on the early success with a similar approach to last season, Dion said, but getting some early victories has provided a significant lift.
"They set the bar high for themselves, saying 'this is our team, this is a new team,'" the coach said. "So it's nice to get a couple of wins early, it relieves a little bit of the stress and allows them to go out and play free and have fun."
