Bar Raised Again for Milford Baseball After Tourney Bid
For decades, Milford baseball appearing in the district tournament was akin to the old adage about "death and taxes," it was something to be counted on each and every spring.
A five-win campaign a year ago snapped that streak, but the Scarlet Hawks found themselves back in the tournament this year with no plans to lower expectations moving forward.
"We want to compete for a league championship, a district championship and someday a state championship," Milford head coach Alex Dion said. "Those are the expectations every year."
Dion made it clear he has no plans to go back to missing out on the playoffs following the Hawks' run to the quarterfinal round this spring and an 11-win campaign.
"This is what we talked about since Day One when I was hired here, the tradition this school has," Dion said. "The bar is not going to get lowered."
Just hours after the 2019 season came to an end, Dion said he was already excited about the prospects for next year due to a large number players coming back, including several starters.
Luke Rosa and Colby Pires return to the mound for Milford in what
will be their third seasons as starting pitchers. Sophomore Carter Scudo
is back after starting in the outfield this year and Nick Wimette, who
will be a senior, has a year of starting experience at first base under his
belt. Sophomore Mario Lee made 11 appearances out of the bullpen for the Scarlet Hawks this spring and Westin Soloman, another sophomore, made six appearances on the mound and pitched in the postseason.
"There's six guys right there who have a good amount of experience," Dion said. "And we have a bunch
of guys who got some valuable experience during practice this year."
Milford finished third in the Hockomock League's Davenport Division and won a tournament game after missing out on the playoffs entirely last year. Dion said the success this season should have his squad wanting to better this year's accomplishments in 2020.
"We want to be in the playoffs every year, the guys on this team got a little taste of that," he said. "Hopefully it makes them hungry to get a little more."
