Nipmuc Baseball Geared Up for League Play
Six games into the 2011 season, Nimpuc baseball has posted a 4-2 record and, despite a setback or two along the way, is headed into the teeth of league play with some momentum on its side.
"I don't think we've played a complete seven innings yet, we always seem to have some walls in games," said head coach Steve DellaRovere. "We need to cash in more when we get runners into scoring position, but our pitching has been a strength and we are getting guys on base."
Left-hander Mike Smith has been particularly impressive on the mound for the Warriors. He pitched a shutout in a 5-0 win over a normally potent offense in Oxford and also picked up the victory against Hopedale. "He really has mixed up his pitches very well," said DellaRovere.
Timmy Sabean has been a workhorse for the Nipmuc staff. He has worked in the majority of the teams games, either starting or coming out of the bullpen and picked up the victory over Groton-Dunstable.
The offense has been sparked by Dan Geary and Adam Serrucci, who have been two of the teams leading hitters throughout the season. Kelly Rooney has been one of the primary table setters batting at the top of the order.
Nipmuc took its second loss on the season last Monday, a 10-7, 10 inning defeat against Blackstone-Millville Regional. "That was a tough one for us; we really struggled out of the gate and made some errors that gave them some runs," said DellaRovere. "We didn't settle into a rhythm offensively and give them credit, they made the plays when they had to and killed some of our rallies. It was a frustrating game, but also a good learning experience."
The head coach will hope that his team learns quickly, with the majority of league play coming up over the next month of the season, beginning with games against Douglas and Whitinsville Christian this week. DellaRovere says the first handful of games were instrumental in getting the team ready for the upcoming stretch.
"We have some kids who are inexperienced and haven't played a ton at the varsity level," he said. "Early in the year it takes a few weeks to see what you got, we are working on the things we need to work on and we are ready for the last month of the year."
