Nipmuc Baseball Crossing Goals off the List

Nipmuc baseball had its sights set on the postseason from day one, and through the first 13 games Steve DellaRovere's team has already come within a single victory of making that goal a reality. The Warriors are 9-4 on the season, and lead the league with a 6-1 mark. "We've been playing pretty well," said DellaRovere. "The pitching has been good, everything else has been coming around, and I'm really very pleased."
Nipmuc has been led by its starting pitching, particularly Tim Sabian and Mike Smith. The pair struggled at times earlier this season, often getting into trouble after walking hitters. The command for both pitchers has improved according to their head coach. Sabian was dominant in an 8-1 win over Hopedale, and did not allow a walk through seven innings of work. Smith had similar command of the strike zone in a close, nonleague loss against Doherty, and has a shutout against Oxford on his record this season.
In league play, the Warriors were able to avenge their only loss, hammering a Blackstone-Millville team 14-1 just three weeks after suffering a 10-7 loss to BMR.
Offensively, DellaRovere is quick to point out that it has been team driven, with the entire lineup contributing from top to bottom. Junior catcher Tom Paine has strung together several consecutive multi-hit games and left fielder Brian Ferrucci has been heating up. "(Paine and Ferrucci) have stepped up recently but it has been pretty much a whole team effort," said DellaRovere.
Senior third baseman Dan Geary has also been a consistent contributor for the Warriors. "He has been that steady presence in the lineup," DellaRovere said of Geary. "He plays a good third base and he has always been there offensively. We rely on him, if we need something big, we expect it from him."
Nipmuc needs just one more victory to qualify for district tournament play, and sits in the driver's seat when it comes to winning the league. With upcoming games against Douglas, Holy Name, and Shepherd Hill, DellaRovere knows his team needs to stay sharp in order to challenge for some of the bigger goals ahead.
"Going into the season, the goals are always to win the league, get into the districts, and then readjust and see where you are as a team," he said. "Districts are always crazy, anything can happen, you can run into a hot pitcher, anything. We just want to win the league, get into the districts, keep playing good baseball, and see what happens from there."
If the Warriors continue their winning ways, they may end up crossing a few more items off the to do list.
