Nipmuc Volleyball Tabs Corey as First Coach
There have been a number of challenges confronting the volleyball boosters and Nipmuc Athletic Director Bill Leaver as the school worked to start a brand new volleyball program this fall. One of the easier decisions may have been hiring Christine Corey as the program's first head coach.
Corey, an Upton resident, has been involved in volleyball in Mendon and Upton for the past decade. She started a volleyball program with the Upton Youth Club and has been working with adult volleyball in the town for the past five years.
"I've been involved for quite a while," she said. "I definitely feel supported in taking this position. The generosity from local businesses and the support from parents have all been very positive."
Corey played volleyball at the Division I level at Northeastern, where she was an outside hitter. She spent some time on the semi-professional circuits after graduation and coached at Boston Latin Academy in the 1990s. She will hold tryouts for the team, which will compete at the Junior Varsity level, beginning September 8th.
"I am looking for players who are coming in with a good work ethic," she said. "I want the kids to get along as a team on the court. I am looking for potential, but it's more about them having fun and building on that."
Corey will lead the girls' team this fall. She has not been named as the coach for the boys' team, which will play in the spring, but said she hopes to fill that position as well.
"The youth program is coed so I have coached both boys and girls and it is always nice to see them grow up," said Corey. "We have some great kids coming through the (youth) program who are always willing to help out the newer players."
Corey also stressed that she would like to see cooperation between the boys and girls, with each team helping out at the others matches or practices during their respective seasons. While she has a clear vision for the program, the Xs and Os on the court will be determined by the level of talent at tryouts.
"We are at the JV level where the critical elements are serving and passing," she said. "So we are going to work mostly on fundamentals."
Still, Corey stresses the team element above everything else, saying, "You can have the best players in the world but they need to get along with each other and, most of all, have fun."
