MHS Golf Eyes District Berth
Milford High golf posted six victories in the regular season in 2010, which was the most the program had earned in recent memory. Eight matches into the 2011 campaign, the Scarlet Hawks are 5-3 and have the district tournament firmly on their radar. "This is our best starting record," said head coach Jay Potty. "We've had a nice run of it, we are pretty happy, and the kids are gaining confidence."
Potty's team is one of his deepest, but the top six has been consistent throughout the first half of the season. Ryan Boldy is the team's number one player and routinely shoots in the high 30s. "He played a ton this summer and got himself into other tournaments to gain some more experience in competition," said Potty. "He has made some huge strides from last year."
Matt Ferrelli has also been a consistent scorer. The lengthy hitter has not shot higher than 42 so far this year, and fired an even-par 35 in a win against Nipmuc. David Rice played in about half of the team's matches last season, but has earned the number three spot in the order this year. "(Rice) really took it upon himself to get better this year," said Potty. "He worked on his game and his interest in golf has really grown."
Connor Mulcahy refined his game by playing at the Hyannisport Golf Club over the summer and has been a contributor at the varsity level since his sophomore year. Matt Roxo has played in nearly every match since his freshman year and is the longest tenured Scarlet Hawk on the team. Sophomore Colin Brennan played on the JV team last season but made the jump to the varsity rotation this year and has Potty very excited. "Colin has a bright future and a very nice swing," he said. "He has a good temperament for the game. He's an easy going kid and just loves to play."
The top six have all shown vast improvement from last year according to their head coach. "They all worked hard to get better, play a lot over the summer, and get their golf games in the best shape they could be," said Potty. "They buy into it and want to win and make the districts."
No one can recall a Milford team qualifying for the district tournament, but halfway through the year the Hawks are in the mix for team post-season play. "They are a good group and they really want to make districts," said Potty. "That's their goal and they've worked really hard to try to make it a reality. It's been really fun to be around."
