School Committee Supports Upgrading Fields

The October 7 Milford School Committee meeting featured a follow up presentation by the Milford Community Field Project Ad Hoc Committee. Although the ad hoc committee met with the school committee on prior occasions, the school committee voted unanimously at this meeting to support the project as it goes before town meeting in late October.
The fields project will upgrade athletic facilities at Milford High, including building artificial turf fields and updating the tennis court, the track, the softball field, the bleachers, the fences, and the parking lots under the current proposal.
Glenn Howard, a Landscape Engineer of CDM Architects, made a presentation on the $3 million proposed project and answered questions for the committee. Howard explained that lead free turf fields improve safety, alleviate drainage problems, and are easier to maintain than grass.
"There are accessibility and code issues," Howard explained that the fields, bleachers, and press box need to be accessible. Committee member Patrick Kennelly completely agreed, "the real upside of this is the accessibility, the drainage, the lighting. With code and compliance, the actual seating arrangements, these are things we will not be doing over in 10 years."
Committee member Will Kingkade asked for clarification concerning the turf fields, which would likely need to be replaced at the end of the estimated 10-year lifespan. Howard assured the committee that replacing the turf would be an estimated $300,000 when the time came, but that this was just one component of the overall project, much of which would not need updating for numerous years.
Committee Vice-chairwoman Lori Baranauskas, who had voiced tremendous support of the project at the beginning of the presentation, put the motion forward saying, "I'd like to see it go to the Town Meeting floor with the School Committee behind it, because the fields are part school property,"
If Special Town Meeting approves the funding request, the Milford Community Fields Project may be completed as early as fall 2011.
