Oh Captain(s) my Captain(s)
Lincoln-Sudbury High School (LSHS) made headlines recently with a new approach to leadership in high school sports. Beginning this year, the team decided to do away with the traditional idea of team captains and instead implement a system of "shared leadership" in which teams will be lead by a group of student-athletes. This council could include all of the seniors or even all of the athletes on a particular team.
"As coaches and teachers, we need to develop leadership among more students," LSHS Athletic Director Nancy O'Neil said in an interview with a Sudbury newspaper.
It's a nice sentiment, but it seems to me that what Lincoln Sudbury is really trying to do is develop a system that gets them off the hook when angry parents complain about their kids not being named a team captain. One of the LSHS coaches, baseball coach Kirk Fredericks, noted the line of parents marching into Mrs. O'Neil's office after captains were chosen to complain because little Johnny or Jane wasn't among the chosen few.
I asked Milford High AD Rich Piergustavo whether a similar system might ever find its way to the Scarlet Hawks squads.
"It's an interesting idea, to say the least," he said. "However, I like the team captain concept. I don't always like the way they are selected. I feel the best way in selecting captains is a combined team vote and a coach's selection."
