Clough Golf Classic a Hole-in-One

Golfers Tom McLaughlin, Steen Christensen, Patrick McEnaney and John Lahar (l-r) participate in the 1st annual Clough Classic Golf Tournament on May 17 at the Shining Rock Golf Course in Northbridge. All of the proceeds from the tournament will go to purchase new technology for the classrooms at the Clough Elementary school.

The Clough Elementary School PTO hit a "hole-in-one" with their 1st Annual Clough Classic Golf Tournament on May 17. Sixty golfers came out to play at the Shining Rock Golf Club in Northbridge on May 17 for a four player scramble on the 18 hole, par 72 course, voted 2011 Best in Boston by Boston Magazine.
This year, the new PTO board needed to "think outside the box" about fundraising for the school, which was where the idea of a golf tournament fundraiser was born. The four-person golf committee of Michelle Kelly, Jennifer O'Donovan, Karen Ditmars and Dawn Calvey, have worked tirelessly since last August finding a suitable location for the tournament, doing a marketing campaign within the community, and securing over $10,000 worth of donations, raffles and silent auction prizes.
The crisp spring day welcomed the golfers who had paid the $135 entrance fee which included greens fees, a golf cart, continental breakfast, a Blackstone BBQ lunch and dessert. Over 30 additional people joined the group for lunch and to participate in the auction and raffle, including Mendon Upton Regional School Superintendent Dr. Joseph Maruszczak and Clough Principal Janice Gallagher.
Raffle and silent auction prizes during the event included items such as a BOSE sound system, a Dragon Naturally Speaking software package, an Andy Spencer photography session with prints, a one hour photo session with Braga Photography, a Playtown Express play package, a Joe's Coffee House gift basket, a Clark's Shoe gift certificate, a Magpies and Fireflies hair accessories gift basket, a Jazzercize one month free gift certificate, a Cutie Cakes Party Package, a Kathleen Murphy Designs handbag, a Lauren Heather's Tastefully Simple Gift Basket, Inside Corner gift certificates and 52 weeks of Friendly's Ice Cream, all secured or donated by past or present Clough parents. Also for the events luncheon, an intricate golf themed cake was donated by Creative Cakes by Lynn.
Many of the event sponsors were friends and family members of the Clough community including SKO Designs, Ambur Machine Company, American National Power, Honey Farms, Feeds & Needs, JJ Mechanical Services, Swifts Creative Landscaping, PAWS Bed and Biscuit, McCarthy Pools and Millennium Real Estate, and Dunkin Donuts Distribution Center. Waters Corporation also donated to the cost of all printed materials and Milford National Bank sponsored the dessert table for the luncheon.
Clough Classic committee member O'Donovan said that the event as a "great success." She added,"We made over $8,000 in profit, which will be donated to the school in order to put new technology directly into the classrooms." Plans are already in the works for next year's tournament.
