BVT Volleyball Bounces Back in Districts

Coming into the season, Brian Lehtinen made no secret of the fact that one of his team's main goals was to win the State Vocational Tournament. The tournament is the first of its kind for boys' volleyball, and BVT was one of the teams selected after posting a 13-3 record in the regular season. The Beavers beat Keefe Tech 3-1 in the state voke semi-finals, but lost to Greater New Bedford in straight sets, 25-11, 25-23, 25-6.
If falling short of the goal bothered the Beavers, they didn't show it. BVT bounced back to win its opening match in the district tournament, sweeping Worcester South last Friday to move into the quarterfinals and Tuesday's match-up with Xaverian.
The district seeding played out as expected. Milford and Lincoln-Sudbury earned the top two spots. BVT had an opportunity to grab the third overall seed when the season finale against Wachuset came around, but the Beavers suffered a 3-0 setback to finish with a lower winning percentage than the Mountaineers and ended up with the fourth seed.
BVT did earn the top spot in the Colonial Athletic League, with an 8-1 league mark, two and a half games clear of 5-3 Worcester Tech.
Throughout the season, Lehtinen has credited the play of Anthony Allen as one of the team's top offensive threats. Fellow senior and co-captain Patrick Gonya has also been a consistent force for the Beavers.
"Allen is solid outside, he has a great spike and a very strong jump serve," Lehtinen told the Town Crier earlier this season. "Gonya has been solid inside, one of our best blockers and spikers."
Nick Manguso has run the offense as the setter, and has been adept at getting the ball to whomever has the hot hand on a particular day, according to Lehtinen. The head coach has also credited the play of junior Matt Bushey.
"Matt has really stepped it up and has played a key role as an outside hitter for us," he said.
The winner of Tuesday's match between Valley Tech and Xaverian moves on to play the winner of the match between top-seeded Milford and Algonquin.
