Milford Softball Wins Central Finals

The Milford High School softball team shut-out Holy Name High School in the Central Division 1 Final by a final score of 12-0 at Worcester State University on Saturday, June 9.
The Hawks were led by ace pitcher, Shannon Smith, who has been nothing less than extraordinary on the mound all season long. Smith hurled seven shutout innings while striking out 15 of the 26 batters she faced. Smith allowed only three hits in the ball game, two of which were bunt singles as well as walking two batters and one hit-by-pitch.
"She (Smith) gives us a chance to win every single day," said Milford head coach Brian Macchi. "You feel very fortunate having a pitcher of that caliber pitching for your team."
Phenomenal pitching performances is nothing new for Shannon Smith as she was named Gatorade Massachusetts Player of the Year for softball after posting a 20-0 record with over 300 strikeouts this season. Smith's success was not only limited to the pitching clinic that she displayed, as she also cranked a three run homerun in the fifth to make the score 12-0.
Despite the success of Shannon Smith, Milford's Central Division 1 Championship comes from a total team effort, and great coaching. Lizzie Stallone led the Scarlet Hawks offensively going 3-for-3 with three runs batted in and a walk in the final.
"She's (Stallone) been doing it all year long," said Macchi. "She's caused a lot of two-out damage for the bottom of our lineup and really set the tone offensively for us."
Everyone contributed to this historic season and remains hungry for more moving forward in the team's quest for a state championship. The Hawks move on to face Agawam in hopes of getting back to another state championship game.
"The ultimate prize and the ultimate goal is still out there to accomplish," said Macchi. "The mission statement is not complete and we still have one more week of business that we would like to take care of."
The Scarlet Hawks will play Agawam in the State Division 1 semifinals at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 12 at Worcester State.
