BVT Golf Looks for Postseason Spot

Through the first nine matches of the season, Blackstone Valley Tech golf coach Brian Lehtinen had mixed feelings about the way his team had performed. The Beavers got out to a 5-4 start to the season, but a number of close matches left the head coach feeling as though they could have won a few more.
"We had close losses to Bay Path and Monty Tech," he said. "Our season has been a little back and forth. Being in the small school division of the Colonial Athletic League, I had high expectations and thought we would be a little more dominant."
Even so, BVT, which plays out of Highfields Golf Club in Grafton, was only three victories away from earning a spot in the district tournament heading into a week that included a pair of matches with cross town rival Nipmuc. "It will be interesting to see where we stand over the next couple of weeks," said Lehtinen. "We are really battling it out to make the playoffs."
The relatively young roster has been anchored by junior co-captain Evan Bonvino, who is in his third season as a member of the varsity team. He has consistently brought home medalist honors as the Beavers' low scorer and regularly shoots in the high 30s or low 40s for his nine hole round.
"A lot of the time, he doesn't need much help," said Lehtinen of Bonvino. "He has a nice, smooth swing and knows his swing very well. He hits a high ball and has good mechanics."
Lehtinen said Bonvino is at the level where he is able to "work the ball"...golf vernacular for being able to hit shots right to left or left to right on command. Lehtinen is also impressed with Bonvino's temperament on the course. "[Bonvino] is very relaxed, quiet, and focused when he plays," he said.
The Beavers have also gotten strong performances from senior co-captain Roland Barrett and sophomore Brendan Scarborough. Both players have been shooting in the low to mid 40s more often than not and have helped BVT post solid scores on a consistent basis. After Bonvino, Lehtinen has a number of players capable of contributing scores in the mid 40s or lower. He is working to make his entire team more consistent by improving their game on what Bobby Jones deemed the most important golf course, the space between ones ears.
"A lot of it is the mental game, learning to leave the driver in the bag if they are playing a dogleg par four or a short par four," said Lehtinen. "These guys have solid swings, but remembering what club to hit in what situation is also very important."
Lehtinen also pointed out something that is universal amongst golfers of all ages and ability levels. "Working on putting always helps."
