Valley Tech Advances to Division 6 Super Bowl

The Blackstone Valley Tech football team used a strong second half to come back and beat Assabet 27-20 in the Division 6 playoffs and earn a spot in Saturday's Super Bowl.
Taylor Hanson rushed for two touchdowns, the first of which was a three yard score to put the Beavers up 7-6 in the first quarter. Hanson was answering a score by Aztecs' running back Paul Harpin, who ran it in from 50-yards out to open the scoring and gave Assabet a 14-6 lead with another score at the end of the opening period. Harpin scored again in the second quarter to give his team a 20-7 lead headed into the locker room at halftime. He finished the game with more than 200 yards on the ground.
The Beavers defense was able to hold down the Assabet ground game in the second half and sophomore Ben Reiffarth picked up a 16-yard touchdown to make it a 20-14 game.
In the fourth quarter, Hanson, the Beavers' leading rusher, struck again with a 77-yard touchdown on the ground. The extra point was no good, but BVT had come back to tie the game at 20. Reiffarth would provide the winning touchdown, a 12-yard run in the fourth quarter.
In addition to his offensive heroics, Hanson made perhaps the biggest defensive play of the day when he ran down Harpin before he could break off what would have been a fourth touchdown. The Beavers defense eventually forced a turnover on downs on that possession.
Valley Tech will take on Bay Path in the Division 6 Super Bowl. The two teams met on November 3rd, when Bay Path handed BVT its only loss on the season in a narrow 13-12 game. The Minutemen used a touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter to come from behind and beat the Beavers, and will come into the Super Bowl with the same 11-1 overall record. Bay Path has won 10 in a row. The two teams are evenly matched statically, averaging more than 30 points per game on the year while giving up fewer than 11.
Kick-off is set for 1 p.m. on Saturday, December 1, at Worcester State.
