BVT Girls Basketball Gets Defensive

The Blackstone Valley Tech girls' basketball team rattled off 10 straight wins following its only loss of the season, and sits in second place in the Colonial Athletic League with a 10-1 league mark and a has a 13-1 record overall.
A big part of the success has been the Beavers consistency on the defensive end. The Beavers allow fewer than 32 points per game, the lowest total in the Colonial and the fourth lowest total in all of Central Mass girls' basketball. A quick scan of BVT's box scores shows a list of opposing point totals that have kept the pressure off the Beavers' offense. BVT allowed just 24 points last week in a win over Worcester Tech, held Parker Charter to 29 points, and barely allowed Keefe Tech to hit double figures in a 57-12 win back on January 18.
Leading the offense is Ashley Thompson, who averages 13.4 points per game. The junior has been in double figures in all but one game so far this season, including a season high 20 points against Nipmuc and 19 and 18 over Monty Tech and Douglas.
Sophomore Meghan McFadden has chipped in 10 points per game, with eight double figure outputs. She scored 19 points against Bay Path. Senior Kelley Ney has stepped up her offensive game over the last few contests. With McFadden held to a single digit point total in two of her last three games, Ney has turned in a couple of her best efforts. She scored a season high 12 points against Keefe Tech and topped that with an 18 point performance against Worcester Tech.
Valley Tech's only loss of the season came earlier this year to University Park, a team the Beavers played again this past Tuesday. The two teams have been the top two in the Colonial all season long and an exercise in contrasting styles. University Park is averaging close to 64 points per game, the top offense in the league, and boasts the top two scorers in the league.
The Beavers will host Bay Path tonight at 6:30 p.m. and have four regular season games remaining over the next two weeks. The final home game of the regular season will be February 12 when BVT welcomes Nashoba Valley Tech.
