Milford Tabs Todd as New Football Coach

Joseph Todd is only 33 years old, but the former Hofstra linebacker has already experienced football at every level from Pop Warner all the way up to the NFL. He will take on a "first" this fall, however, as he takes the reigns of the Milford High program in his first head coaching gig.
"I loved coaching in the college ranks," said Todd, who had stints as an assistant coach at Iona, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Wagner from 2005-2009. "But I wanted to get back to Massachusetts and have some stability. I learned a lot, but moving to high school football was great because it allowed me to become a head coach much quicker."
Todd is a Mansfield native and comes to Milford after spending the past two seasons as the defensive coordinator at his alma matter, Mansfield High. He helped take the team to the Eastern Mass Division 2 Super Bowl last season. Todd was a standout linebacker for Mansfield from 1993 through 1997 before playing four years at Hofstra. He had stints in training camps with the New York Jets and Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2002 and 2003. A linebacker and defensive coach by trade, he says his experience will be valuable on both sides of the ball.
"When you are a defensive minded guy, you study so many offenses, and you know what works," he said. "You develop a style you like and that works for you."
While he said his style will depend on his personnel next fall, he would like to build his offense around running the ball. "I want us to be a ground control team," he said. "We will have different running tracks and change things up a lot, run play action, move the quarterback around, and try to run some play action as well. Obviously it will help if we have a quarterback who can run and throw."
Milford will move into the Hockomock League as a football member next season, and Todd has a great deal of experience with Hockomock programs having coached and played at Mansfield. Mansfield and Milford scrimmaged the past two seasons, but Todd's first interaction with Milford football came two decades ago.
"I was playing for the Sharon Pop Warner team and we had a great team when I was in the eight grade," he said. "We went to the playoffs and played Milford and they beat us. When you're young and you get beat like that, it sticks with you, so I've always known they have a strong football history.
Todd takes over a team that went 2-9 last season. He replaces Tom Cullen, who was 20-34 as head coach over the past five seasons.
Todd said he does not make predictions in wins and losses, but has some clear goals for the program. "Our main goal is to give the kids the best experience possible," he said. "If we do that, we will be successful. We want to get our players to max their potential on the field, in the classroom, in the weight room, and in the community. That is the measurement of success."
