Avery Finishes Stellar Career at Valley Tech

Every game, Blackstone Valley Tech head baseball coach Anthony Leonelli had a number of choices to make regarding who would earn a start in a big game. Writing Dan Avery's name down as the starting pitcher, however, was perhaps the easiest decision he'd have to make.
"It's a unique situation, getting the ball in every big game we've had for the past three years," said Leonelli. "He's been our top guy since I got here and he's always competed, always kept us in it, no matter who we've played."
In three seasons as a starting pitcher, Avery compiled a 20-7 record with a 1.59 ERA. He won 10 games his junior year, helping the Beavers to their first league title in more than 30 years and a victory in the state vocational tournament. This season, BVT was perfect in the Colonial Athletic League and was once again in both the state voke and Central District tournaments.
"Each year has gotten better and better over the past few years," said Avery. "This year ended on a loss, but overall it was a great four years at BVT and I have no regrets."
Leonelli said two aspects of Avery's approach on the mound made him the standout pitcher he's been for the past three seasons.
"He can locate all of his pitches and locate them well, you don't get a lot of that at the high school level, but he always had a plan out there," he said. "He's also completely unflappable. He shows little emotion. You look at him out on the mound and you don't know whether we are winning or losing or whether it's the first inning or the seventh."
Avery also showed off that calm demeanor at the plate, where he's improved each season and worked his way into the middle of the order in 2013, hitting .492 with 24 runs batted in and 29 runs
