Milford Football Begins a New Era

For first-year head coach Joe Todd, the last several months have been one long evaluation process. "When I was first hired, it was just a matter of learning who the kids are, leading who the leaders are, getting them in the weight room," he said. "Then we went through the summer and did seven-on-sevens in Franklin and we saw who could throw, catch, and cover. Then you get the pads on, and we see who can hit, who's a good football player, and we start to figure out our strengths and weaknesses. "
The evaluation culminates tonight as the Scarlet Hawks visit Marlboro in the season opener.
"It's exciting to finally take the field for real," said Todd. "We came into training camp with a scheme and a game plan, but this isn't the NFL where you can just go out and get a quarterback or a linebacker to fit your scheme, we have had to match it with the talent we have and it's been a work in progress throughout camp."
Milford plans on featuring a balanced offensive attack led by junior quarterback John Hearns. "John is still stepping up and evolving into his potential," said Todd. "There is still a ways to go but once he reaches what he is capable of, he should be a very good QB."
Senior wide-receiver Eric Nunez will one of the top targets for Hearns and will also start in the defensive backfield. He's another player who has earned high praise from his head coach. "Eric does all the right things," said Todd. "He is a good tough, hard-nosed kid and a good leader."
In the backfield, Milford will rely on a trio of juniors in Quentin Orr, Jonathan, Rodriguez, and David Abrego. They will run behind a young offensive line comprised of juniors and sophomores. Sophomore Pete Fallon and junior Mike Casey will start at the tackle spots. Junior Eric Brogioli and junior captain Sean Burns will start at guard and sophomore Austin Pyne at center. What the line may lack in experience, it makes up for in size, averaging more than 250 pounds.
On defense, senior captains, Mike Branch and Cole McNanna, anchor the secondary and a third senior captain, George Chakalos, will be a starting linebacker. Senior Scott DeCapua will start on the defensive line along side Burns. Freshman Blake Hill is also expected to see time at linebacker.
Todd expects a fairly evenly-matched game tonight when his team travels to Marlboro."They are a well coached team that runs the option, so we will see a lot of different formations," he said. "It's a good opening game for us, I don't think either team is an overwhelming favorite, so it's a good, even match up."
For Todd and the rest of the Milford coaching staff, the off-season evaluation process has ended and now it's time to see how the Hawks stack up in a regular season tilt.
"I think we have a solid crew of starters," said Todd. "We will see what happens when we play in a real game as far as who can play. We've see them in the scrimmages, but haven't seen them in a true game yet, it'll be a test for us."
