Depth for MHS Boys Soccer in 2013

The Milford boys' soccer team brings both depth and experience into the 2013 season, after a 2012 campaign that saw the Scarlet Hawks earn a spot in the district tournament. Head coach Jim Asam said it's simply a matter of things coming together.
"We had a good pre-season, but our first game proved we have a long way to go," said Asam following the Hawks' 4-1 loss to Taunton in the season-opener. "Some of these guys have played together for awhile, but we need to get the team working together and there is still some work to do on that front."
Leading the way for Milford is a group of 16 seniors. Senior forward Justin Asam is back on the field after recovering from a torn ACL. Classmates Bryan Rodriques, Peter Bae, Nicholas Damasceno, Mathews Oliveira, and Luciano Vieira are all returning for their final season. Junior midfielders Juan Quintero and Kevin Riberio and sophomore goalkeeper Mike DaSilva are all returning after starting roles last year. "With the numbers and balance we have this year, we should have a lot of depth," said Asam.
The head coach was able to use 18 of the 21 players on his roster in the season opening loss to Taunton. "By the end of the game, I had a completely different lineup than what we had in the preseason," he said. "That's the plan, it's all part of trying to get guys comfortable with where I am putting them."
Three more seniors, Dave Frongillo, Jesus Ruelas, and Humberto Pinho figure to play significantly larger roles than they did in 2012. The Scarlet Hawks added depth comes from the rest of the senior class, which includes Tarik Miranda, Andrew Filadelfo, Josh Bombardier, Alex Morin, John Scozzafava, and Bryan Pires.
Milford also has three sophomore newcomers who will all see playing time in forward Sttarley Flores, midfielder Justin Borges, and defender Luis Goncalves. "I think scoring is going to be a strength for us," said Asam. "We only got three shots off against Taunton but during the preseason, we scored nine goals in 90 minutes of scrimmages time. I am hoping that we are not too far off from generating 10 shots and three to four goals per game."
Asam does see a need for improvement and experience on the other side of the field, as MHS graduated talented defensive players in Jon O'Neil and Brendan Pounds last season. Two of the Taunton goals on Tuesday were scored on counter-attacks. "Defense is an area where the guys we want to step up really need to do so," said Asam.
Like all MHS teams, the boys' soccer program will be more familiar with the Hockomock in its second go-round through the league. Milford finished 2012 9-2-5 in the Hock, good enough for second place in the Davenport division.
"We have a better idea of what to expect this season," said Asam. "Taunton, Oliver Ames, Canton, Franklin, right on the down the line you have teams that are strong, with good size and talent. I think we can be back up where we were last year, but we are going to have to turn it around quick and be ready to play every time we take the field."
