BVT Girls Basketball Finishes Strong

The Blackstone Valley Tech girls basketball team finished the season the same way it started the year, by playing winning basketball. The Beavers won six out of seven to start the year, and closed out the regular season by winning five of its last six contests.
Valley Tech closed out the regular season 15-5, more than enough wins to qualify for a spot in the Central Sectional tournament. BVT finished third in the Colonial Athletic League with a 12-4 record, trailing 15-1 Assabet and 13-2 Parker Charter. The Beavers did improve against the cream of the league in both cases.
After falling to Parker by 13 in early January, BVT bounced back for a 59-50 win at the end of last month. They also narrowed the gap against Assabet, losing by 11 points on the road earlier this year before a narrow 42-40 defeat last Wednesday.
Like many of the stronger teams in the CAL, defense has been a hallmark for BVT. Brit Kahler's team is third in scoring defense, with opponents averaging just 36 points per game. No team scored more than 38 points in any of the Beavers final five victories, and the season came to a close with a 41-34 home win against Douglas and a 48-34 triumph over Monty Tech.
The Beavers continue to be paced by senior Ashley Thompson. She's averaging more than 18 points per game; good enough for the lead in the Colonial and the second best average in all of Central Mass girls basketball. After missing three games at the end of January, she returned to the line-up and has posted five straight double-digit scoring efforts. Her point totals have improved each game, from 13 against Douglas on February 7 to a 20 point outing against the same team on the February 14 and a 26 point outburst against Monty Tech in the regular season finale.
Junior Meghan McFadden is the fourth-leading scoring in the league, averaging 13 points per game. She has 13 double-figure scoring efforts and provides one of the top one-two punches in the area along with Thompson. Juniors Dominique Silvestri and Samantha Chamberlain have also been steady contributors.
Valley Tech will await it's district tournament pairing. The Beavers advanced all the way to the Central Sectional title game last season before falling to University Park.
