Nipmuc Hosting Boston Marathon Tune-Up Race

The 34th annual Tri-Valley FrontRunners Boston tune-up 15k will take place on Saturday, April 5, starting and ending at Nipmuc Regional High School. The race is expected to draw more than 300 runners from around the area, according to the event's co-director, Frank Nealon.
"Last year we had more than 350 runners and we are hoping for somewhere between 300 and 400 this year," he said. "We will have trophies to the first man and woman to cross the finish line and awards for the first three finishers in each of the various age categories."
Registration for the 15K, just over 9.3 miles, will be open through the morning of April 5. Race amenities include a scenic, mostly hilly paved course, digital timing, and volunteers covering the road and passing out drinks at the aid stations. After the race, food and drinks will be served at the Nipmuc cafeteria, including desserts and a variety of homemade soups.
"We had been down in Whitinsville for the first couple of years before moving to Nipmuc," said Nealon. "The high school is an ideal place. We can use the cafeteria for the food after the race and they have been taking very good care of us."
A portion of the after race funds will go to support the Jimmy Fund of the Dana Farber Cancer Institute through the Pan Mass Challenge. The race will start at 10 a.m., and runners will be able to register that morning beginning as early as 8:30 a.m. Awards will be handed out at noon.
Nealon says the race draws a wide variety of runners. "We have a lot of people from the area but we also have a number of people who come from Western Mass or the Boston area or even from out of state," he said.
The race is presented by the Tri-Valley FrontRunners, a group formed by the merger of the Upton Road Runners and the Tri-Valley running club. The only local running club, the FrontRunners have more than 250 members of all running abilities. They sponsor several other events throughout the year, including a trail running series and a 10K in memory of the late Larry Olsen, a former cross country and track coach at Milford High School, who was instrumental in the merger and development of the running club.
Just 16 days before the 118th running of the Boston Marathon, the FrontRunners consider the 15K a good "tune up" for those tapering and in their final stages of preparation for the big event.
Despite the cold weather creeping into March, Nealon is optimistic about a favorable climate for running by the first week in April. "We always have to wait out the weather, but so far we have never had to cancel," he said. "We had a bit of snow one year but the town plowed the route and we were good to go."
Registration for the 15K is $25 if done online or by mail before midnight on April 3. Information on how to sign up can be found at Tri-ValleyFrontRunners.com. Registration on the morning of race day is $30.
