BVT Girls Soccer Continues CAL Dominance

For nearly a decade, Blackstone Valley Tech girls soccer winning the Colonial Athletic League has been as predictable as death and taxes...and perhaps about as pleasant for its league rivals. 2014 was no exception for the Beavers, who rolled to a 7-1 record in the league and a ninth straight CAL title.
"It's good to win it again, it's important to keep that tradition going," head coach Jay Porter said. "We only have three seniors this year but we want to make sure our seniors leave at the top of their game. Fortunately, we were able to allow them to leave at the top of the league."
Valley Tech clinched the title with an October 25th win over Assabet. Brook Linnehan scored two goals and Emily Muscatell, Madyson Christian, and Shannon Kelley added single tallies for the Beavers in a 5-4 win. The victory was also the tail end of a four-game winning streak which included three wins over league foes.
Linnehan and Christian have led the way for the Valley Tech offense this season. Linnehan leads the team in goals with 16, while Christian holds the overall points lead with 15 goals and five assists. Muscatell has chipped in 10 goals and a pair of helpers.
BVT is scoring nearly four goals per game. Defensively, the Beavers have surrendered fewer than two goals per game and have been lead by sophomore goalkeeper Noelle Trail and freshman Viviana Sebastiano. "Noelle gives us a shot to win every time, she is a great mentor back there and does well to keep our freshmen calm and focused," Porter said. "Viviana anchors the defense even though she is playing against older players."
Overall, the Beavers finished 12-5-1.
"We had a couple of bumps along the way, including a tough loss to Grafton and one against Douglas," Porter said. "They were games that were within our reach but we failed to finish. With minor adjustments, I think we should be fine going into the tournament."
The Beavers sectional tournament run began Tuesday against Gardner in the first round of the Division 3 playoff. Valley Tech did get a taste of the postseason already, however, with a pair of games in the large school division of the State Vocational Tournament.
BVT knocked off Essex Tech 2-1 in the first round of the four-team bracket. Christian scored twice in the second half to bring the Beavers back and put them in the final. There, Asasbet was able to exact a measure of revenge with a 5-3 victory over Porter's squad.
"It was just one of those games where we couldn't get anything to work right for us and we went away from our game plan," he said. "When we do that, we don't play great soccer. We need to stay focused even when we are losing. We need to stay on track and keep our composure with a lot of younger girls. We just need to stick to our game plan moving forward."
