Boucher Named Milford Athletic Director
Peter Boucher has a pretty clear goal in mind when it comes to his vision for the Milford High School athletic department: win.
"We are the Scarlet Hawks and I really feel we are on the cusp of spreading our wings," the newly-named athletic director said. "The Hockomock championships are going to run through Milford. If you want to win a league title, you'll have to beat us first."
Milford Superintendent of Schools Dr. Robert Tremblay announced Boucher's hiring on Monday and Boucher says he is aiming to be on the job by December 1. He comes to Milford from the Canton school district, where he has been serving as an elementary school principal. His career in education also includes time working at the middle school, high school, and collegiate level. Along the way, sports and coaching have always been important focuses.
"I feel like I can coach just about any sport and the past four years are the only ones I can remember where I was not part of a team or athletic program," Boucher said. "I have been able to figure out what works for me as a coach and as an athletic administrator and this is the sort of athletic directorship I have been looking for."
Prior to his time as elementary school principal, Boucher served as the K-12 Director of Wellness in the Canton School system. His past experience includes a stint in Florida as Athletic Director in the Venice School System and at Manatee Community College. He was named the 2006 Teacher of the Year in Sarasota County as well as the Florida Wellness Teacher of the Year. He also worked for more than a decade as a phys ed teacher.
A Norfolk native and a 1989 graduate of King Phillip High School, Boucher competed in cross-country, wrestling, and soccer. He is a member of the KP Hall of Fame as both a cross country runner and coach, and ran cross country while an undergrad at Bridgewater State. He said he became interested in searching for an AD position about a year and a half ago, and that he and his wife Melissa, who live in Blackstone with their two young boys, had three things in mind for the ideal position.
"We wanted something geographically close, ideally something in the Hockomock League, and a place that is a ferocious sports town," he said. "I am going to give my best every single day and I expect the same from my coaches, administrators and student-athletes. Milford fits the bill. We competed against Milford in a number of sports when I was at KP and we didn't win too often. I know what they bring to the table."
Boucher brings a winning mentality that transcends the playing field in what he terms a "relentless pursuit of excellence."
"I want kids and coaches to hone the focus and be ready to give a maximum effort all the time," he said. "This includes every day in practice, on weekends, and when you're not with your team. It's about making good decisions in the classroom, eating right, and having the right attitude."
Boucher is just the third person to hold the position of Athletic Director in Milford since 1981. Nick Zacchilli served as AD from 1981 until his retirement in 2008. Rich Piergustavo took over the department from Zacchilli, but stepped down this summer to take a position as assistant principal at Milford High. Zacchilli had been filling the role on an interim basis during the fall season, and both he and Piergustavo will meet with Boucher in the coming weeks to ensure a smooth transition.
"I'm excited and I can't wait to get starter," Boucher said. "I want to bring common expectations to all of our programs. We are going to hold people accountable, we have championship expectations."
