Milford Track Athletes Stand Out

During the winter track season, Milford High has not only produced a large team numbers wise, but has also produced a number of standout athletes. Head coach Lori Brogioli may find herself bringing solid contingents to the state meets and beyond as the season winds to a conclusion in the coming weeks.
Leading the charge is junior Michelle Savoie, who has proven herself to be something of a track and field prodigy. She has already qualified for the state meet in the two-mile, the mile, the 1000 yard run, the 300 yard dash, and the long jump.
While most athletes excel in one facet of running, whether it is distance, middle distance, or sprints, Savoie has shown a unique ability to handle anything her coach throws at her. "She is just incredible, you won't find many girls they can run a sub 12 minute two-mile and long jump more than 17 feet," said Brogioli. "If I stuck her in the 600 she would qualify there too, basically any event aside from shot put."
Michelle won't need to worry about throwing the shot; her teammate Siaina Campbell already has that pretty well down pat despite being just a sophomore. She is the top thrower in the league and has qualified for states with a personal best of more than 32 feet. Siana happened upon her success after coming out for winter track last year. "She had always been a great softball player but decided to come out for indoor track and loved it," said Brogioli. "She loved it so much that she did spring track and ended up winning the league in javelin her first year."
Also leading the girls' team is Julianna Sheehan, who has been a standout in both the hurdles and the high jump. She has been a qualifier at both the state and the national level. "We are really looking for big things from her," said Brogioli.
On the boys' side, there are several athletes who will be trying to qualify for states over the next couple of weeks. Among them is senior Matt Alley in the 55 yard dash and senior co-captain Steve Ward in the hurdles.
Brogioli has eight captains for this year's team, a fairly large number. She felt she needed to have particularly strong leadership given the size of team. Four girls and four boys are serving his captains this season. For the girls Heather Campbell, Alex Jacobson, Katie Barie, and Caroline Atkinson lead the way. The boys' captains, in addition to Ward, are JJ Shea, James Bolanos, and Evan Cheaney.
Milford will compete in the Mid-Wach League meet on Saturday, February 5, at Fitchburg High School. Those heading on to the states will compete at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston later on next month.
