Depth a Calling Card For BVT Baseball

First year head coach Scott Felper has had a few surprises in his initial weeks working with the Blackstone Valley Tech baseball team, and they've all been pleasant. "We have a lot of depth when it comes to pitching," he said. "I didn't think we would have this many guys who really want to throw."
The new head coach has also been impressed with the quality of the bats and, perhaps most important, with the overall attitude of his new charges.
"These guys stick around after practice and take extra grounders or get in some extra swings, they are always doing something and are very self motivated," he said. "I know they're itching to get outside. They want to reach their goals and it's fun to be around a group that's this excited, serious, and determined."
6'5" senior Austin LeBastie is expected to lead the way on the mound and junior Tyler Brodeur will also likely eat a lot of innings. They'll throw to senior Sam Danis who should be a key cog in the wheel in multiple ways.
"We are looking for Sam to play well defensively and handle our pitching staff," Felper said. "He is a smart player and it's his fourth year playing varsity baseball, so he will bring that experience with him this year. He should also be a big bat in the middle of the order."
BVT also returns the top of the order with seniors James Roy and Danny Burdick expected to fill the roles they held last season. Senior Colin Fiorentino is another likely starter at third base. Andrew Carroll played shortstop last year but could play anywhere in the infield or outfield and may also see some time on the mound.
"We have a handful of seniors returning who played a lot last year and are looking to contribute again this season," Felper said. "I think the seniors are going to be a big part of our lineup."
Juniors Matt Marchant and Joe Hanson could also be impact bats for the 2015 Beavers. Felper is in his first year as the BVT head coach after taking over for Anthony Leonelli. The new coach spent the past two seasons at Tri-County, but still has some familiarity with the Colonial Athletic League.
"I know these guys want to finish at the top of the CAL," he said. "And just from looking at last year's standings, I know we need to go through some pretty tough teams to get there.
"It's tough to pick out all of our strengths and weaknesses when we are inside, but I think we are solid and have a of depth at the plate and on the mound," Felper added. "We are going to compete every day, against every single team."
