BVT Golf Looks to Build on “Great Season”

The Blackstone Valley Tech golf team put together a strong campaign in the 2015 season, and head coach Matt Connors sees no reason why this year can't be even better. [back]
"There is a core group of juniors who are better good players, and they are going to be lead by our senior captain, Tommy Morin, who was one of our better players last year," Connors said. "I am excited about that group returning."
Connors said juniors Nathan Charron and J.J. Newcombe are likely to be the top two scorers on the roster.
"I expect them to be regularly under 40," he said. "They routinely shoot one, two, or three over par at Highfields (Golf Club, BVT's home course) so having a couple of aces like that is fantastic."
After the top two, Connors said he would be sending out Morin paired with Noah Charron. The pair is "right on the heels" of the top two in the rotation, and will average around 41 or 42 for a nine-hole round. Junior Derek Houle will also be a fixture in the rotation, and Connors said several players would be competing to be one of the eight varsity starters each match.
The group of juniors — Newcombe, Houle, and the Charron twins — have Connors fired up for the new season.
"These are four guys who I picked up as freshmen when they made the varsity squad that year," he said. "They play very well and I came in excited about the year and I know they are too. They are already swinging by my classroom at the school talking about wanting to get out there and play matches."
BVT plays its first match on the road against Monty Tech on September 7 before the home opener at Highfields on September 8 against Bay Path. That will be the star to building on last year's success, Connors said.
"Last year we had a great season, we had a tough loss to Advanced Math and Science Academy, who has a tremendous team, so that's our toughest opponent we are looking forward to this year," Connors said, adding AMSA edged BVT by two shots last year when one of their players chipped in for an eagle on a par-5.
"They are in our sights," Connors said. "We finished top five at districts last year and easily could have been in the top two. So I am really excited about the prospect of winning the [Colonial Athletic] league and maybe the district as well."
